What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students who drank alcohol during the 30 days prior to the survey.
This value represents public school students who had at least one drink of alcohol.
Why this is important:
According to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adolescents who begin drinking at a young age are more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. Patterns formed during adolescence play a critical role in health throughout adulthood. Alcohol use also impairs judgment and can lead to other high-risk behaviors such as drunk driving and sexual activity.
Technical Note:  The regional value is compared to the Arizona state value.
